Hi all!!
Did you ever have one of those days where you get up, go through the usual routine getting into the “work” mode…making your to do lists, thinking about all the things that you want to have accomplished at the end of this day and get your self organized….then….
There are those projects that have been sitting in the back of your mind waiting to find the perfect moment to be done and you just don’t feel like doing “the list” you have just created for yourself so the deviation begins! You think hmmmmmmmmmm….I feel like playing in plaster!!!
Off to Lowes to grab some Plaster of Paris! I have been wanting to have some new slump molds for some doily bowls, textured plates, platters and who knows what else!
So I began pulling out large bowls, platters and shapes that I know will just be crazy fun the students will be so inspired. I have done this before and I know its a mess and I know the rules about not getting plaster of paris around clay because of the dangers that will happen. But, I say to myself, “I will be careful and not make a mess…..after all, I have done this before it is NOT my first rodeo!” famous last words! Oh good grief, the first couple of mixes went well, all my molds were pre~Vaselined (is that a word?) I was mixing it well and then….on the last pour for that one I missed the dish and it hit the floor splattered up on my leg all over my shoes and I spewed out several chosen words….okay one word…repeatedly! I just looked at the mess and thought oh good grief, the cameras came out, I suppose it was a great photo opportunity…a messy potter standing in a pile of plaster! I decided the mess had already been born no use crying over spilled plaster move on.
The next batch went better but the last one I must of not gotten enough water in and it really started to set quickly, I began slinging it into all the remaining dishes!!! I couldn’t move fast enough and lost part of that batch. It took me a good thirty minutes at least to clean it up.
I surveyed the floor, me and and my mess….took out the hazardous waste, cleaned up the floor once more and then counted 20 different molds, all shapes and sizes. I still have to clean it up tomorrow after I remove it from the molds but, 20 molds!!!! It is kind of like christmas, so much fun. I am exhausted now but when I can just reach for them, I will be so grateful!!!
I don’t think I have any energy left to get much else done, luckily no classes today. Yay for that! I will be looking forward to getting them cleaned up tomorrow and using them!!
See ya on the flip side!
